Downloads for 2023 Editions of California Supplement

Back Next

Release 2023.01a now available.

Initial installation for the year must be from the first California Supplement (540) program we provide you for the current tax season. Once you have completed the installation, you can use these on-line updates for subsequent changes throughout the tax season.

TIP: Before executing these downloads, exit Tax Preparer by closing the Tax Preparer Control Panel. If you do not, you will encounter an error message indicating that HSPrnTax.EXE is being used by another process, and the update will not be completed.

The downloads on this page are only for California Supplement for Form 540 returns. Downloads for Tax Preparer for Form 1040 returns are found on the Main Downloads page. Downloads for the Partnership Edition for Form 1065 returns are found on the Partnership Downloads page.

Changes in recent releases

(updated 4/18/2023)

Release 2023.01a differs from Release 2023.01 as follows:

  •   Form 540 revised:
    •   Voluntary Contributions for line 110 corrected. Total contributions entered on our Voluntary Contributions Worksheet are now properly carried back to Form 540, line 110, when you return from the worksheets. Formerly, the amount for line 110 remained at zero, so the contributions did not affect your refund or amount due. CAUTION: For a Voluntary Worksheet completed with the prior release, you must, after updating to the current release, itemize to the worksheet then return to Form 540. The total from the worksheet will then appear on line 110 and will change refund or amount due accordingly.
    •   Special Handling codes corrected. The proper 1-character codes for the Special Handling that you identify on screen 2 of Form 540 are now printed on page 1 of the graphic Form 540.
    •   Identification of executor or guardian simplified. When a taxpayer is deceased or otherwise not capable of preparing or signing the return, you formerly entered the representative's name in our data entry line for Executor or guardian and identified the type of representative on separate lines that follow it. But you are now instructed to identify the type at the end of your entry for Executor or guardian, so we have expanded our entry space for Executor or guardian from 25 characters to 35 characters.
    •   Obsolete data entry lines removed. Because they are no longer used by the FTB, the data entry line for Representative type and the question All spouse entries are for RDP? are removed from screens 2 and 3, respectively.
  •   Schedule CA revised:
    •   On-screen instructions for Part I, line 8z revised. A footnote is added at the bottom of screen 8 of Schedule CA, Part I, to highlight the fact that you must report income from Form(s) 3803 (shown at the top of screen 9) on a worksheet for line 8z.
    •   Data entry for Part II, line 8d revised. The data entry lines for Mortgage insurance premiums on line 8d are removed and the label is changed to Reserved for future use because a deduction for mortgage insurance premiums is no longer allowed under federal law (and was never allowed under California law). CAUTION: If you entered any amounts on line 8d with the prior release, you must, after updating to the current release, change an entry on Schedule CA, Part II, to force its recalculation so that your entry is removed from calculated totals.
    •   Page 5 of graphic Schedule CA revised. Line 8d of Schedule CA, Part II, changed to Reserved for future use with all data boxes shaded to match the FTB schedule.
  •   Form 3514 revised:
    •   Handling of medicaid waiver and IHSS payments revised. Screens 3 and 5 revised to make your election more flexible when you choose to include or exclude all or part of the payments when computing earned income for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).
    •   Part VII (Young Child Tax Credit) revised. The printout for Part VII is now totally blank when you have no qualifying children under 6 or you have no EITC. (The software already properly prevented a credit from being computed in this case, but some lines in Part VII could previously have irrelevant entires that could be confusing.)
    •   Part IX (Foster Youth Tax Credit) revised. The printout for Part IX is now totally blank when the age of the taxpayers is younger than 18, or is 26 or older, or you have no EITC. (The software already properly prevented a credit from being computed, but some lines in Part IX could previously have irrelevant entires that could be confusing.)
    •   Pages 3 and 4 of grpahic Form 3514 revised. Labels for the headings for Parts VIII, IX, and X corrected. They were formerly labeled as Parts VI, VIII, and VI, respectively.
  •   Form 3803 revised: CAUTION added at bottom of screen 4 to emphasize that you must manually enter the federal income and adjustment for California on a worksheet for line 8z of Schedule CA, Part I, Section B.
  •   On-screen labels corrected:
    •   Control Form. Label Block Sch.P-Pt.I auto-creation changed to Block Sch.P,pg.1 auto-creation because Part I is only one part of the 2-part 1-page schedule for California AMT.
    •   Form 540. Label QW: Nondepnd. child changed to QSS:Nondepnd. child to reflect FTB change in label for filing status 5.
    •   Schedule CA, Part I, Sec. B. Label 8b Gambling income changed to 8b Gambling to conform with FTB form.
    •   Form 3800. Label 1=Sgl,2=MFJ,3=MFS,4=HofH,5=QW changed to 1=Sgl,2=MFJ,3=MFS,4=HoH,5=QSS to reflect FTB change in label for filing status 5.
    •   Form 3532. Label 1b Widow(er) (died pre-1/1/22) changed to 1b Surviving spouse/RDP to reflect FTB change in label for filing status 5.
    •   Form 3803. Label Adjustment for CA,I,ln 8f changed to Adjustment for CA,I,ln 8z. (Calculations were correct; only the label was wrong.)
  •   California Tax Forms Guide 2023 Edition updated. The form-by-form on-screen manual for our California Form 540 software is now fully updated for the 2023 filing season. It is accessible from the Documents button on our floating Tax Preparer Control Panel and is highly recommended to keep on the screen when working on forms with extensive changes this year, such as Schedule CA, Part I, and Form 3514,
