Changes in recent releases

(updated 4/15/2024)

Release 2024.01f differs from Release 2024.01e as follows:

  •   Form 1040 revised as follows:
    •   Filing as surviving spouse? (on screen 4) is now fully automatic, now answered Yes ONLY if married filing jointly and one, and only one, spouse died, as indicated by a date entry at the bottom of screen 1 or 2. Otherwise, No. (Previously, you could manually answer Yes even if both spouses died or not married filing jointly.)
    •   Official printouts revised in two areas for better aesthetics and clarity: (1) a duplicate supporting statement reference for line 16(3) (when itemized) is eliminated, and the reference is shortened for readability; and (2) the layout of the signature block at the bottom of page 2 is refined so that the flags Filing as surviving spouse? and Personal representative are more legible and more room is available for required signatures.
    •   An e-file pretransmission error averted when your entry for In care of(or other add'l) in your address entry (on screen 3) exceeds 33. (We allow 35 characters to be entered, but for the e-file output your entry is prepended by '% ', making the entry exceed the maximum IRS-allowed 35 characters if you enter 34 or 35 characters.)
  •   Form 1116 revised (Standard and Premium Levels only)
    •   to correct two references to Form 1040, line 5, at line 18, which are now properly Form 1040, line 15. (Calculaions were not affected. Only on-screen text and draft printouts were affected.)
  •   Form 5695 revised (Standard and Premium Levels only) as follows:
    •   Worksheet supporting line 21c revised by changing its title to QUALIFYING HOME WORKSHEET (to be more descriptive than the prior title of LINE 21C WORKSHEET).
    •   On-screen Form 5695 revised for better aesthetics and clarity by, among other changes, adding boldface titles and blank line separaters to separate entries for different types of property.
  •   Form 8283 revised as follows:
    •   Effect of detached worksheets revised so that all transfers from worksheets to Form 8283 are nullified when the worksheets are detached (as indicated by a "d" beside the worksheet access line instead of an "i"), since all amounts from worksheets must be supported by printouts of those worksheets.
    •   Safeguards added at line 2b (Qualified conservation contribution) so that (1) you can no longer answer Yes to line 2b(1) (Certified historic structure) if your answer for line 2b is No; (2) you can no longer make an entry for NPS # if your answer for line 2b(1) is No; and (3) your entry for NPS # is limited to 5 characters (because NPS numbers issued by the National Park Service are always 5 digits long).
    •   Official printout of Section B, Part II, revised to ensure proper printout format on the form (and in supporting statements when more than one worksheet for line 3 requires Part II of the worksheets for lines 4 and 5), and to make the reference to the supporting worksheets more obvious by printing the cross-reference to the support in the clear area at the bottom right of the printed title for Part II near the top of page 2 of Form 8283 preceded by the phrase See statement for 4a to 5c. CAUTION: If Section B, Part II, is used on any worksheet, the FIRST worksheet for line 3 must use Section B, Part II (screen 2 of the worksheet). Otherwise, none of the data you enter for Section B, Part II, on any worksheet will be printed. (e-file does not have this requirement, but we recommend it even for e-file returns so that you can print a complete copy of the data you entered.).
    •   Form and worksheets revised to add clarity (including added and expanded titles) and to correct on-screen line references (none of which affected calculations nor printouts).
  •   Form 8379 revised (Premium Level only) as follows:
    •   'Other taxes in Schedule 2, line 21' (on screen 9 above line 18) changed from a data entry line to an autocalc line, computed as the sum of all taxes contributing to Schedule 2, line 21, less the taxes separately stated as contributors to line 18 of Form 8379.
    •   'Other payments in Schedule 3, line 13z' (on screen 10 above line 20) changed to include only two of the four components of Schedule 3, line 13z, because the other two are credits already reflected in line 17.
    •   Form revised to add clarity and to correct on-screen line references (none of which affected calculations nor printouts).
  •   Form 8582 revised as follows:
    •   Screen 7 revised by removing 'No entry required on this page' at the top of the screen because there is a data entry line this year for Prior year unallowed CRD above line 3.
    •   Screen 8 revised by changing the line above line 9 (If CRD in 3, adj. for CRD) from a data entry line to an autocalc line, using the instructions and IRS worksheet for line 9 on page 11 of the IRS 2023 Instructions for Form 8582.
  •   Form 8606 revised as follows:
    •   Amounts shown for 'inital max contribution' on screen 3 corrected to $6,500 ($7,500 if age 50 or older).
    •   Roth Ira Worksheet revised by adding translation from last year for the line Regular contributions for 2021 on screen 10.
  •   Form 8615 revised as follows:
    •   'Net operating loss deduction' changed (above line 1) from a data entry line to an auto-calc line by automatically transferring the amount from line 8a of Schedule 1.
  •   Form 8959 revised (Standard and Premium Levels only) as follows:
    •   'Independent contract wages' removed (above line 1) because such wages would be reported by the employer on Form 1099-MISC or 1099-NEC, not Form W-2. Calculations were NOT affected because that line was never included in the calculation of line 1.
  •   Tax Forms Guide updated for all but 3 forms not yet installed.
  •   Newly released IRS publications are added (Standard and Premium Levels only) for easy access from the floating Tax Preparer Control Panel. Several important publications were updated by the IRS after our last release, including IRS Publications 17, 334, 550, 560, 561, 570, 575, 590-B, 925, and 938. Form SS-8 and its instructions are also added.

Release 2024.01e differs from Release 2024.01d as follows:

  •   Form 8889 revised (Standard and Premium Levels only) to correct the maximum contribution allowed for self-only coverage. The maximum contribution is now properly $3,850 for self-only coverage (plus $1,000 if age 55 or older) instead of $3,650. This change affects the calculation of 'Limitation per line 3 Worksheet' on screen 1 and line 3 of the form (on screen 2). CAUTION: For a Form 8889 created with a prior release and identified as self-only coverage, YOU MUST, after installing this update, change your answer on screen 1 for "Does HDHP cover Family?" to YES, then change it back to NO. This will force the form to be recalculated under the updated software and will generally raise the amounts for 'Limitation per line 3 Worksheet' on screen 1 and line 3 of the form (on screen 2).
  •   Dependents Worksheet revised by changing the question 'Dep's gross inc under $4,400' to 'Dep's gross inc under $4,700?' $4,700 is the proper threshold for 2023 and only income at that level or more could disqualify a child for the earned income credit under some conditions.
  •   Tax Forms Guide updated further, although far from complete at this time.
  •   Newly released IRS publications are added (Standard and Premium Levels only) for easy access from the floating Tax Preparer Control Panel. Several important publications now included were added after our last release, including IRS Publications 1136, 4681, 505, 515, 526, 54, 557, 590-A, 907, 908, and 974, in addition to a revised Form 7210 and its instructions.

Release 2024.01a differs from Release 2024.01 as follows:

  •   Form 4562 added to all levels for figuring Depreciation and Amortization.
  •   Form 8283 added to all levels for documenting Noncash Charitable Contributions as required for claims of more than $500 on Schedule A.
  •   Form 8839 added (Premium Level only) for claiming a credit for Qualified Adoption Expenses.
  •   Form 1040 revised in the format for line 25b for reporting withholding from various Forms 1099. The line above line 25b now excludes Form 1099-R when showing total withhold entered on forms and worksheets throughout the return. However, withholding entered on our Form 1099-R Worksheet (for lines 4a through 5b of Form 1040) is included in the total for line 25b. This change is required due to a quirk in IRS e-file requirements, but has no effect on calculations nor paper returns. CAUTION: For a previously prepared e-file returns with withholding reported on a Form 1099-R Worksheet, you must, after installing this update, change an entry on Form 1040 to force its recalculaion under the new update in order to prevent a rejection of the return from the IRS.
  •   Schedule H revised to correct the threshold for filing of Schedule H to be required. The correct threshold is $2,600 or more of wages paid to any one employee in 2023. However, calculations used a $2,700 threshold, and graphic printouts formerly showed $2,400 in the text for line A. 4the y levels for figuring Depreciation and Amortization.
  •   Form 5695 revised in its on-screen text to clarify when installations must be in your MAIN home to claim a credit vs. installations in any home in which you reside during the year:
    •    The text at the top of screen 1 is expanded to clarify that the home need not be your MAIN home for the cited lines on Form 5695.
    •    The text for line 21a is corrected by changing 'main home' to 'a home.'
    •    The text for line 26a is clarified to require the installation to be in your MAIN home.
In summary, the only lines for which installation in your MAIN home is required are lines 7a through 11 (for fuel cell property), lines 17a through 20b (for qualified energy efficiency improvements), and lines 26a through 26c (for home energy audits). (Note that your MAIN home is the home where you lived most of the time in 2023, whereas a home in general is anywhere you lived during 2023, However, both types of homes must be in the United States for you to claim any credit on Form 5695.)
  •   Form 8582 revised so that it is printed in the proper order when you print the complete return. Because its Attachment Sequence Number is 858, it is the last form printed (except for Form 5884, which has an Attachment Sequence Number of 884).
  •   Form 8867 revised for aesthetics at the top of the the printed form to match the current IRS design in which the preparer's PTIN is printed to the far right, just below the taxpayer's SSN.

IRS Publications 463, 544, 957, and 970 are added, Form 7206 is added, and instructions for Forms 2106, 5695, 7205, and 8283 are added.
